Welcome to the OpenSTA.org portal
This Web site is the dynamic and community driven alter ego of www.OpenSTA.org as well as the home of the official OpenSTA FAQ.
OpenSTA is a distributed software testing architecture based on CORBA. OpenSTA is designed to be used by Performance Testing Consultants or other technically proficient individuals. Using OpenSTA a user can generate realistic heavy loads simulating the activity of hundreds to thousands of virtual users. This capability is fully realized through OpenSTA's distributed testing architecture.
OpenSTA graphs both virtual user response times and resource utilization information from all Web Servers, Application Servers, Database Servers and Operating Platforms under test, so that precise performance measurements can be gathered during load tests and analysis on these measurements can be performed.
OpenSTA is Open Source software licensed under the GNU General Public License. The source code is available on http://opensta.sourceforge.net/

EC2, what is it? Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud consists of leased computers running virtual machines. It offers virtually unlimited compute and network scalability, on the operating system of your choice, on demand, dirt cheap. Read more about getting started with EC2 here.
OpenSTA, what is it? OpenSTA is a distributed software load testing tool designed around CORBA. The current tool set has the capability of performing scripted HTTP and HTTPS heavy load tests with performance measurements from Win32 platforms. OpenSTA is open source and totally free (well, free in the sense that puppies are free... training, support, and maintenance are available at additional cost.)
Why OpenSTA on EC2? To be able to run 10's of thousands of virtual users with as much network bandwidth as you want for about $10 PER DAY for each 1,500 virtual users.

Performance Testing Web Applications with OpenSTA is the title of a presentation I will give at StarEast in Orlando on May 18. The abstract for the presentation is here.
This is a repeat of the one I gave at StarWest and AQAA in 2006. The presentation is available for download here.

The terminology used to discuss Performance testing in technical publications and support forums can be ambiguous or inconsistent. Hopefully this article will help participants in the OpenSTA user support forum by providing a common frame of reference for discussing tools, testing, and test results. It may also be helpful to those new to performance testing.

This article describes how to use an Excel pivot table to generate a report from data exported from OpenSTA. The report shows average, min and max response times, standard deviation, and count of samples by user by timer. The spreadsheet can be downloaded from http://iperformax.com/downloads/OpenSTAPivotTable.zip
Note: Performax provides software load testing, performance analysis, tuning, optimization, and characterization services to help our clients build, market, and deploy highly scalable applications. Read about OpenSTA quick start training.
